It all started when…

As a theatre practitioner, dancer, actor, performance artist, film maker, writer, and Dj Kayla uses her art as catharsis, truth telling and healing.  


Through theater Kayla has depicted stories untold and forgotten, all while using the medium of dance, movement, performance art and acting. Some of Kayla's Theater work includes A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer, Other Side of the Game, Diasporic Journeys: A Multi-Arts Installation, and her play For Fried Plantains. 


As a film maker Kayla is invested in telling stories that are left on the periphery. Through film Kayla pushes the boundaries of how we understand what it means to be human. By using cinematography, sound, writing and story telling. 


As an essayist, writer of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, Kayla writes about ancestry, grief, diaspora and what it means to be human in a world that understands you as otherwise. Her writing is striking , blunt and has been described at 'disarming' 


As a Dj, Kayla uses music and sound as a means of healing. grieving and freedom. She is deeply influenced by 70's funk, 90's - 00's hip-hop, rock steady, ska, reggae, Vouge music, bounce, Jazz, doom soul, Yoruba Hymns and the voices and sounds of resistance.
